The Plymouth Congregational Church was organized in 1764 in the new community of Plymouth, New Hampshire. A primitive log meetinghouse was erected as a house of worship. Erection of the frame for the first building, overlooking the town common, began on July 4, 1836, and the first regular service was held in the frame building on January 1, 1837. From its founding, the men and women of the church have maintained the commitment that our meetinghouse would serve not only the needs of the church, but of the whole community. On September 6, 1983, fire destroyed our building, but not our spirit. Thanks to the generosity of the Plymouth United Methodist Church, our services continued in their building until Easter Sunday, 1985, when we moved back to the town common and into the newly constructed building on our old site. The new building is a handsome, three-level structure with a sanctuary that seats 350 persons. Large granite blocks from the original foundation form a visible part of the walkways and retaining walls. In the sanctuary, many parts of the original pews and pulpit saved from the fire continue to remind us of our past. |
